Tavistock Run Project athletes drew inspiration from the marathon exploits in Vienna and Chicago last weekend with with some impressive performances of their own in what turned out to be a busy weekend of racing for the club.
English Schools’ Cross Country Champion Oliver Smart made an impressive start to his 2019/20 Cross Country season winning a silver medal in the under 17 men’s race at the Cardiff Cross Challenge on Saturday 12th October.
Tavistock Run Project athlete, and Mount Kelly student, Smart ran a hard fought race narrowly missing out on a win in a sprint to the finish line. The top two runners pushed each other on a muddy and challenging 5,650m course, averaging a sub five minute mile pace, and crossed the line 22 seconds ahead of the third placed runner in a dominant performance. The British Athletics Cross Challenge Series has a strong and prestigious reputation and attracts the best distance runners in the country. It includes the European Cross Country Championships trials later next month.
Down amongst the biomes TRP athletes were causing a stir at the Eden Project half marathon. In the men’s race Marc Smerdon took 3rd place in 1hr 20 on the hilly multi trail course while Rachael Malthouse came home victorious in the ladies event in 1hr 33. Supported by strong performances from Hannah Smith, Hayley Clarke and Jo Arscott the ladies finished as 2nd team a really outstanding effort.
Up in Oxford Corin Russell set yet another personal best at the Oxford half marathon. Corin crosses the line in the excellent time of 1hr37.
Across the Atlantic Ed Smith was running in the shadow of Mo Farah with all that entails as he took on the challenge of the Chicago marathon. After a period of disrupted training Ed ran conservatively to record a time of 3hrs 03.
Finally, TRP athletes once again made their presence felt at the Great West Run at Exeter. Considered one of the premier half marathons in the South West it was good to see TRP athletes at the fore with Jordan Andrews finishing 2nd in a time of 1hr 12, Crispin Chambers fishing 1st in the vet 55 age group in 1hr 28 and Hannah Walters continuing to progress finishing in 1hr 48.
Great running from a club that continues to build its reputation through hard work and consistent training.
