Westward Ho was the setting for the last Westward league cross country race of 2019. A threatening landscape greeted the runners with dark clouds gathering and a cold wind whipping in from the Atlantic however cross country runners are hardy souls so they took on the challenge with Christmas spirit.
In the under 17 men’s race TRPs Oliver Smart gave a demonstration of sustained pace leading from gun to tape, eventually winning by a margin of 90 seconds.
Next up was the senior ladies however seasonal obligations left TRP without a full team. Rachael Malthouse ran superbly to record her best performance of the year. Running her first race for the club Claire Fraser acquitted herself well and will prove to be a valuable member of the club.
The senior men’s race brought an end to proceedings for the day. Ben Neale and Jordan Andrews went off with a strong lead group led by eventual winner Aaron Richmond of Bideford. With the first two breaking clear Ben sprinted home for 3rd place his highest placing over the country. Jordan finished a close 6th and Chris Rimmer who ran a more conservative race rounded out the top 10. Supported by Lewis Mill 51st and Corin Russell 71st in his debut over the country the team looked to place in the top 3.
After the Christmas festivities a number of TRP runners will compete at Yeovil in the South West Counties championships.
